a patchwork of scattered and disjointed inspirations, there is a real
unity and singularity at work, resulting in a record which can be
enjoyed as a collection of sonic poems, simultaneously nonchalant and

Reissue of a classic
1974 Ethio jazz LP from one of its founding fathers and all round
musical genius, Mulatu Astatke. The tracks were later included on the
Ethiopiques series of albums and compilations, which brought the
treasures of the Ethiopian music scene of the 60s and 70s to a wider
audience. Two tracks were also used on the soundtrack to the Jim
Jarmusch movie "Broken Flowers".

This set was compiled by band leader Carlos Nio with recordings from

DETTMANN, MARCEL - FEAR OF PROGRAMMING
Nearly 10 years on
since his last solo LP, Berlin techno icon Marcel Dettmann arrives on
Dekmantel with an expansive album captured in a flash of inspiration.
In many ways Fear Of Programming is a reflection on the artistic
process - the critical hurdles one has to overcome, the constant strive
for originality, the ability to capture inspiration in its pure moment
of inception. Bar the closing title track (and we all know Marcel loves
a surprise closing), these 13 tracks came together during a period in
which our hirsute host was able to immerse himself in studio practice
and set the intention to record an album's worth of material every
single day. From the resulting mass of work there were many options to
choose from, and Fear Of Programming stood out as one of the most
complete statements on Dettmann's approach in the here and now.
Unconcerned with an overarching concept, it was the work in the studio
which drove the musical direction. No labouring over knotty
arrangements, no painstaking mix downs - just honest expression, a
moment caught, a groove locked, a stroke of synth sent pirouetting over
a cavernous bed of texture. The results are varied, and while you might
well hear plenty of bruising machinations in line with the techno
Dettmann has made his name on, there are plenty of other shades
expressed across the album.

The second
instrumental acoustic record from Jonny Dillon, aka Automatic Tasty.
Previously better known for his analogue electronic music productions
as Automatic Tasty, Jonny Dillons debut acoustic LP Songs For A
One-String Guitar took the listening public by surprise and the critics
by storm when it dropped out of the blue on All-City in 2019. It
represented a departure for an artist who was renowned for having the
Midas touch when it came to coaxing dance floor fire from all manner of
hardware. But fortune favours the brave and temporarily setting the
machinery aside and following an acoustic path to the waterfall has
already reaped rich rewards for Jonny Dillon. Hell never say it in so
many words but heres a man on a mission: "Fail as I may, I have to go
back and try again every time, to wait in hope for a glimpse of the
spirit that hovers over the face of the deep, and to keep watch for the

Seven years after the classic 'Theater of a Confused Mind' (as
Population One), Detroit techno phenomenon Terrence Dixon is back on
Rush Hour with a new album, this time under his own name.
It would be a massive understatement to say we're proud of this one.
After all our whole operation was named after one of Dixon's early
tracks ('Rush Hour' originally appeared on a double EP called
'Hippnotic Culture' on fellow Detroit legend Claude Young's Utensil
Records in 1995) and 'Reporting from Detroit' again finds the maestro
in outstanding form.
'Reporting from Detroit' is another prime example of the distinctly
unique sound language Dixon has developed over the last three decades -
defiant, forward-thinking afrofuturist techno that could only have been
made in the Motor City. But this is not just mere Detroit techno - it's
a sound language that's unique to Dixon. An instantly recognizable
high-octane sonic language fueled by frantic funk that's constantly
pushing the boundaries of machine music without ever losing the

Cenac (of Newcleus fame). Recorded and released in 1990 and is an
absolute gem of a record - very much in the vein of Larry Heard's best

Electronic soul classic! Now available again for the first time in 22
years, remastered + full artwork.
'A truly, dreamy, beautiful classic deep-house mini-album from the
golden-post-Larry Heard era. New-yorker Ben Cenac, who was also member
of electro pioneers Newcleus (and part of Sha-lor, who had a cool jazzy
garage-house hit in the late 80's), shows a great sensibility and
delicacy here in following mr Heard's path.
His approach is perhaps slightly more sci-fi in the synths and pad
sounds, and perhaps a tad less crafted and mercurial in production than
the master (i.e. less timeless), but this adds in realness and charm.
So, past the classic deep-garage dream "My Love Turns To Liquid" (in
the vein of these sultry garage productions from Peter and Vanessa
Daou), the rest of the record shows constant quality, with song titles
that could have been (or actually have been) used by Mr. Heard himself,
and a content oscillating between warming deep-house, sweet acid, lush
garage and relaxed spacejazz piano parts, the whole thing also evoking
the Beloved's better 'rave' moments ("The Sun Rising" etc).
This record could be studied in university as the synthesis of the
deep-house scene of the early 1990s. Classic.' (Review by Restless,

Avalon Emerson &
the Charm is an evolution. Created during an extended break from the
hectic blur of her life as a touring DJ, the album is a personal
statement of intent from an artist whos long looked beyond the club for
inspiration. It's also the first time that Emerson has put herself, her
emotions and, most notably, her voice fully into the spotlight.
Having spent her entire career working more or less alone, Emerson
purposely sought out a small cast of like-minded artists to help bring
the album to life. A Chief among them was UK avant-pop savant Bullion,
who executive produced the record and, most importantly, shares both
Emerson's predilection for shimmering pop melodies and her
boundary-less approach to music-making.
Working together, they cracked open her head and heart alike, creating
a space where she could intimately reflect on the people and places
shes loved and left behind.

Sometimes its easy
to see why certain albums fail to reach a wider audience and sink
without a trace not long after release, but why Fernando Falcao's
Brazil-only debut album 'Memoria das Aguas' wasn't acknowledged as the
masterpiece is is straight away as the timewill forverr remain a
mystery. Maybe it's because it came out thirteen years after Falcao had
to flee his motherland after activity protesting Grazil's military
regime in 1968, not exactly making him the Brazilain household name he
should have been. Chances are the fact it was released more than two
years after it was initially recorded in his new ome France in 1979
didn't help sales either. So kudos to teh good people al Selva Discos
for making this rare-as-hens-teeth and criminally underrated album
available once again, since it needs to be out there for all to hear.
'Memoria das Aguas' is a unique and compelling concoctionof botn
traditional and modern Brazilian styes, postmodern classical, ambient,
jazz, tape experiments and abstract sounds derived from Falcao's
homemade instruments such as the balaue,a horizontal version of the
berimbau string instrument that produces the watery, flowing sound teh
album was named after. the balaue is introduced in teh stunning opening
track, a miniature symphony that slowly spirals into dizzying depths.
Falcao invokes both Afro-Brazilian and Latin-American spirits in a Jon
Hassell-like Fourth World setting with 'Amanhecer Tabajara', before
moving into Edu Lobo territory with 'Revoada' and capturing the sounds
of a bustling bazar with 'Mercado'. The stunning 'Curimao' is teh
absolute centerpiece of this brilliant album - a fast-paced six minute
samba attack with ripping horns, full-on percussion and dervish-like
handclapping that will floor and unsuspecting listener. 'Solito' rounds
off this wonderfully balanced album, revealing Falcao's painstaking
attention to detail before finally pouring the remnantsouhnc t'a r

Music From Memory's
fourth release sees the Amsterdam based label taking an exciting
sidestep with the release of "Clouds", an album of contemporary music
recorded in spring 2014. "Clouds" is the debut album of Gaussian Curve,
a collaboration between Italian ambient pioneer Gigi Masin, Land Of
Light's Jonny Nash and Marco Sterk (also know as Young Marco).
Each of them established in their own rights, the three musicians from
Italy, UK and the Netherlands, came together during a weekend long
recording session in April of this year.Without preconceived ideas and
developed around often purely intuitive improvised jams, the eight
tracks on the album are all 'one take' live recordings. With Gigi Masin
on Rhodes and piano, Jonny Nash on guitar, melodica, synths and trumpet
and Marco Sterk on synths, rhythmic structures and production duties,
the three of them succeed in developing a musical language all of their
own.
Recorded in the heart of Amsterdam's Red Light district, the album
reflects the unusually warm Spring and the buzz from the open windows
that filled the derelict downtown studio space during that particular
weekend. Whilst on the more introvert late night compositions the music
quietly soars, reflecting the brooding melancholy of an evening in that
particular part of the city. With a heartfelt simplicity "Clouds" is a
record of an inspired meeting of unique souls and unique surroundings.

In the spring of
2016, Gigi Masin, Jonny Nash and Marco Sterk got together in the studio
for the first time since they recorded Clouds, the critically acclaimed
debut album from their Gaussian Curve project.
By the time they reconvened in Sterk's new studio in Amsterdam, a
stone's throw away from the temporary, second-floor space where they
recorded Clouds, much had changed. When they first got together in
March 2014, it was for a spontaneous, weekend-long exploration of
shared musical passions. They were merely three new friends expressing
themselves, and having huge amounts of fun in the process.
By the time they got together again last year, the album they recorded
on that famous weekend had taken on a life of its' own. To their
surprise and delight, Clouds had become one of the most admired ambient
albums of the 21st century.

Ever since his days as a pioneer of Japanese electronic music in the
1970s, Haruomi Hosono has constantly pushed forwards musically. The
1990s was a particularly fertile decade for the Yellow Magic Orchestra
co-founder. Following two decades spent creating and releasing
innovative electronic pop, imaginary sound worlds and inspirational
ambient music, Hosono established the Daisyworld label to showcase
cutting-edge ambient, techno and electronica, while also embarking on a
wide range of often overlooked collaborative projects.
N.D.E. - one of the headiest, psychedelic, evocative and gently
mind-altering albums in Hosonos vast discography, is one such project.
It formed part of a run of albums that saw the Japanese producer
embrace contemporaneous influences - think Spacetime Continuum style
ambient techno, DJ Spooky-esque illbient, weighty ambient dub and the
ambient house antics of The Orb - in his own inimitable, far-sighted
style.
He was ably assisted on N.D.E. by an undeniably impressive roll call of
collaborators, most notably no-wave hero turned ambient explorer Bill
Laswell (who Hosono subsequently worked with on joint album Interpieces
Organisation), NYC DJ/producer Francois Kevorkian, and fellow Japanese
ambient pioneer Yasuaki Shimizu.
With such a stellar cast-list, its perhaps unsurprising that N.D.E. has
achieved cult status over the years, despite being near impossible to
find outside of Hosonos native Japan. Remarkably, it never received a
full vinyl release, with only five of the sets cuts appearing on an
ultra-limited sampler. Now Rush Hour is putting the record straight,
delivering a DJ-friendly, remastered version that spreads that albums
seven tracks across two slabs of vinyl.

KIRBY, JOHN CARROLL - TUSCANY
Los Angeles based
pianist, producer, and songwriter John Carroll Kirby traveled to
Pietrasanta, Italy in the summer of 2018 on a self-imposed writing
trip. During his stay he composed Tuscany, a two side-long solo piano
exploration of this particular geographical envelope, a place where
nature is shaped into form.
Kirby would cycle 12 kilometers each day to Cascata di Malbacco, a
waterfall with jade pools and silver stone, and the inspiration for
Side A of Tuscany. His own Cascata di Malbacco tumbles and shimmers
along the piano as a gorgeous eighteen-minute-long improvised piece,
some of it polished and some moments left raw.
On a ride to SantAnna, twenty-something kilometers away, Kirby took a
wrong turn and got lost among the hills, where he encountered several
monuments memorializing the victims of the SantAnna di Stazzema
massacre. The dark history of an abandoned mill house served as the
inspiration for the albums haunting Side B, a eulogy for all of those
forgotten by time.
Although Side A is inspired by the natural beauty of a waterfall, and
Side B by the cruelty that people can inflict upon others, both pieces
revolve around the same seven-note bassline. The idea Kirby is
iterating on is the realization that darkness exists inside light, and
vice versa; Tuscany is an inquiry into this duality and its
consequences.
John Carroll Kirby has recently released music on Leaving Records,
Outside Insight and Pinchy & Friends. In the studio and on the
road, hes produced and/or played with Connan Mockasin, Blood Orange,
Sebastian Tellier, Shabazz Palaces and Solange.
He recently signed to Stones Throw Records.

Richard Lamb's
second and (presumably) final release under this moniker is a bit of a
special one. Lamb starts off with Salt Lick. A track with beautiful,
lush, sunny sounds that lure you into an unexpected world of electro,
heavy bass and more dance orientated tracks like A Life In Harmony.
Following up his first EP Automatic Tango on his own Montreal based
Temple imprint, theres still hints of early Moog greasiness but overall
its a more decisive production compared to the previous one.
Intricately layered percussion mixed together with dreamy pads take you
on a journey to a hidden Utopia where tight arrangements and
tribal-esque rhythms dictate the pace. Once more we are shown how
versatile Lambs productions are and how he juggles genres freely,
ranging from dub to electronica, experimental, idm and techno.
The second side of this EP features two remixes by non other than
Norwegian DJ and producer DJ Sotofett. A heavyweight in the electronic
music scene who needs little introduction takes on the EPs title track
A Life In Harmony and turns it into two electro-acid pieces ready to
tear up any dance floor, or anything else for that matter. Surrender to
the acid and indulge in these masterful tracks.

'Funkadelic touring the vast Caribbean coastline of Venezuela, together
with Afrosound and Grupo Bota, with endless supplies of Aguardiente and
other substances, in a "Back to the future" setting.' ....?
Lola's Dice's debut album is the result of a radical musical
transmutation, marked by the phenomenon of massive Venezuelan
emigration. The songs contained in "Pura maldad" expose the current
point of that process with amazing detail. Rhythms that were considered
exclusively "traditional" and almost untouchable back home (Tamborera,
Gaita) get twisted, stretched and pushed beyond any imaginary limit,
while being combined with healthy doses of Disco, Funk, Electro, Techno
and their Caribbean counterparts, Merengue, Salsa and Compass.
Having taken their first steps in the key of Funk-Rock, things first
took a turn after the leader Javier Bohorquez met Venezuelan producer
Alex Figueira (Fumaa Preta, Conjunto Papa Upa, etc) at a show and he
handed him a business card. The tropical psychedelic sound Figueira was
specialized on spoke immediately to Javier, as it did combine many of
the crazy and groovy elements he loved from the most "out there" Funk
(a la Funkadelic), with the countless Caribbean rhythms he had been
exposed to, having grown up in Venezuela.
After the first EP "Viaje al centro del ritmo", where everything
acquired a decisive tropical tone, a further eccentric exploration of
the music of their homeland became inevitable. The subsequent single
"Cacri 'e Playa / Sr Cartujo" clearly showed where things were moving
towards.
"Pura Maldad" is a true tropical lysergic trip, and while you see
vibrant colors and things move in very strange ways, the sun never
seizes to shine. Despite its profoundly experimental character, the
album proves very useful to anyone in need of getting a party started,
maintained or fully blown up, depending at what point of the evening
its played.

Part of only a small and very much underground music scene in his
hometown of Venice, Gigi Masin self released two modestly pressed LP's
'Wind' (1986) and 'Wind Collector' (1991) and appeared along side
Charles Hayward for the Sub Rosa compilation LP "Les Nouvelles Musiques
De Chambre Volume 2" (1988). Having met with little commercial success
in Italy at the time, Gigi Masin's solo albums remained for the most
part totally unknown. His music has though in recent years, and
seemingly by pure word of mouth, developed almost something of a cult
following. Gigi Masin's uniquely intricate and at times deeply emotive
compositions take the listener into a realm of contemplation, a
spellbound mind state where time and space appear to dissolve. His
sparse and hypnotic often loop-based compositions seem to draw
parallels with Detroit Techno's earliest beginnings, all at once
conjuring those same feelings of both melancholic longing and ecstatic
joy. With access to Masin's large body of work, far greater than that
of the handful of released recordings, Music From Memory's new
compilation covers a period of over 30 years, from the mid 1980's up
until recent works. Including seventeen compositions, most of which
have remained unreleased or unavailable until now, 'Talk To The Sea'
aims to shine a light on Gigi Masin's unique and heartfelt talent. This

dreamscape where stripes of early evening sun pour through partially
closed venetian blinds; kalimba, piano and steel pans meet on the
incredibly evocative arilene (Somewhere in Texas)'.
The Balearic/Italo house heart of arumini' throbs throughout a
celestial epiphany, whilst hadye' is a sun blinded ambient mirage
where angelic voices and electric guitar intertwine, before more
heavenly music ensues on the trance-like alvina'.
A heart-wrenchingly beautiful evocation of transitioning to the other
side, alerie Crossing' is Gigi's compelling and inspirational take on
death, with a vivid evocation of something spiritual, existential and
metaphysical. His exemplary approach shows decease not as a cause for
despair, but a philosophical and poetic exploration of where souls go,
when they leave their earthly bodies.
Masin closes with ahinè' - a twitchy, levitational piece of sublime
deep techno, which transmits high strength vibrations of powerful
emotions. On both this track, and the album of the same name, there' s
no pseudo intellectual ambient posturing with cod academic angles
tagged on; This is music of real substance, coming from a real place.
It's saturated with feelings, but turns mourning into affecting art,
and even a beacon of hope.
Helmed by the deftly talented Alessia Avallone, Language Of Sound is
new record label which marks ahine' as its maiden voyage. Language Of
Sound is also a management company founded in 2017, with singular
talents Ron Trent, Lyra Pramuk, Huerco S, Carmen Villain, Gigi Masin,
Paquita Gordon and Soundwalk Collective on their impeccable roster.
Dedicated to facilitating ideal conditions for artists to flourish,
where appropriate Avallone also collaborates creatively, including the
video for Gigi Masin's arilene (somewhere in Texas)' which she produced
and directed.

MLO - OUMUAMUA
The first
compilation of works by British electronic pioneers MLO aka Peter Smith
and Jon Tye. Titled 'Oumuamua' and second up in the Virtual Dreams
series, the compilation is an in-depth artist focused release
containing twelve thoughtfully selected tracks that touch on highlights
from the duo's discography as well as newly (re)discovered music drawn
from a vast archive of unreleased pieces, sketches and extended jams
recorded between 1993-1995.
MLO's ambient explorations began when Pete and Jon, having first met in
rival punk bands during the late '90s, found themselves with unlimited
access to an incredibly well-equipped studio, having been hired to
produce an Icelandic pop star's record in the early 0s. Particularly
charmed by the Korg PS 3300 and an Emulator 2, Smith and Tye were also
deeply fascinated by outer space and set about developing a musical
landscape informed by both this new state of the art musical equipment
and what lay beyond the Earth's limits. Painting with a palette
informed by classical minimalism, new age and the works of Cluster
& Eno; the duos primary colours were drones, sustained tones,
washes, calming tides, gentle temple bells and soft angelic voices with
flickering glimpses of percussion and drums that hinted at the
possibilities of a dance floor.
'Oumuamua' is a collection of music to get lost-in, a wander down the
mazed, mirrored corridors of the subconscious. Peaceful, flowing,
fresh-water patterns, drawing the listener toward a mediative, inner
space. Not strictly ambient, rather the music rests temporarily within
the boundaries between drum 'n' bass, library music, soundtracks and
Techno. Or how Jon Tye himself puts it: "It really feels like music
from a different place, a different time, made by different people."

Four years after
Nuova Napoli, Nu Genea are back with Bar Mediterraneo, a new album and
journey, which projects the sounds of the Neapolitan duo formed by
Massimo Di Lena and Lucio Aquilina even further.
Nu Genea's Bar Mediterraneo is an idea of a shared place where people
meet and fuse together; a space that leaves its doors open to
travellers and their lives, always exposed to the whims of fate. Some
of this can be experienced through the multitude of sounds that come
together in the tracks, layers of different acoustic instruments,
voices and synthesizers merging in a unique musical blend.
Opening up to the voices of many different people, separated by
languages but united by the sea and the music, Nu Genea's hometown,
Napoli, becomes a true place of encounter.
You can hear this all along. In "Gelbi", a gorgeously deep and
propulsive Ney flute plunges into murky waters of the melancholic
Tunisian dialect sung by Marzouk Mejiri. In "Marechia'", unbridled
happiness and sun ooze from the delicate vocals of Célia Kameni and
create an acrobatic bridge between French and Neapolitan language. In
"Straniero", your soul is arrested from the moment the slow
spell-binding mandolin ignites the hypnotic patterns recorded by the
legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen. In "Bar Mediterraneo", the title
track, bittersweet guitar's riffs, analog waves and choirs are
overwhelming the song giving you what you would like to hear on a boat
trip along the Amalfi Coast.
Nu Genea couldn't afford to overlook their firmly anchored roots into
the Neapolitan culture and its dialect with "Tienaté", where the power
of neapolitan language (interpreted by Fabiana Martone) supports those
quarter-tone strings and the uncessant folk-disco groove that spreads
to the entire song. In "Praja Magia", repetitive mandolin riffs lead
the song, giving space to a choral yet tight vocal line that speaks of
Varcaturo, a village close to Napoli. In "Rire", a volley of poetic,
deceptively laidback, lyrical fury interpreted by Sicilian Marco
Castello intimately combines with a highly musical, multi-textured
instrumental backbone and the swoon of a chanson in its heart. In "La
Crisi'', the lyrics of a Raffaele Viviani's poem from 1930 have been
adapted to a laidback jazz-funk groove in full NG style. In "Vesuvio",
revaluing the evocative verses and powerful mantra of Vesuvio, Nu Genea
re-adapted to the dancefloor a folk song by the working-class band E'
Zezi from Pomigliano D'Arco, combining the voices of a school choir
with Jupiter-6 arpeggios and bold percussions.

Odissey is a group formed by the Adams brothers (Pascal and Richie),
born in Paris to a mother from Guadeloupe and a father from Martinique.
At the time, Pascal was a DJ and radio presenter and Richard was a
guitarist, both being trained singers. They had been making demo's for
some time when one day they met Jolème Narayadou who was a well-known
producer in the country, specialized in charming music who wanted to
produce something other than slow and bolero (very popular music at the
time). The three ventured in the studio and this resulted in the album
Pa flip (which is a Creole expression which means don't be afraid).
The tune Marie Hlène was a hit and is one of the great successes of
Zouk in Martinique. The song is about a man in love with an Indian girl
and takes place in Martinique, a small island in the French West Indies
which saw the birth of Aim Csaire but also Jean-Philippe Marthly,
Jocelyne Broard, Jean-Claude Naimro from the Kassav group, the
legendary band which was born in Guadeloupe and which has toured the
world multiple times.

RAMZI - HYPHEA
New album by
Montreal based artist Phoebé Guillemot aka RAMZi. Featuring ten
mind-melting tracks 'hyphae' is RAMZi's latest sonic quest and is based
around sketches she originally made as a score for a documentary about
mushrooms called 'Fun Fungi' (directed by Frederic Lavoie).
Recorded between November 2021 and May 2022, writing 'hyphea' began as
an attempt to transcend boredom and frustrations imposed by severe
restrictions during the pandemic. For Phoebé the album was a way to
reconnect with her alter ego RAMZi; who's energy brought her back to
uniquely mystical feelings and hope for future magical adventures.
RAMZi is a uniquely wild spirit from the forest and refers to a
parallel autonomous world that keeps evolving. In Phoebé's own words:
"The music remains as a doorway to that world. It has never been about
me, I always see that entity bigger than myself. The process of writing
'hyphea' was rather intuitive. I don't think about styles of music
before producing tracks. Those are more like an adventure in itself,
each one set in a different ecosystem."

SMACK, JIMMY - DEATH IS CERTAIN
Across two 7"s,
Death Or Glory (1982) and Death Rocks (1983) and one 12", Anguish
(1982) Jimmy Smack carved his own bleak chasm amidst the LA Death Rock
scene that he inhabited. After decades dormant in the crypt, Knekelhuis
compiles Smack's full recorded output, providing it a lavish place to
rest on the Death Is Certain LP.
While his local punk contemporaries pursued aggressive hardcore and
political punk, Jimmy Smack donned corpse paint (before it would later
become synonymous with the European black metal movement) and found a
home performing in venues like the Anti-Club, amongst other
subterranean dwellers Christian Death, Dead Hippie and 45 Grave.
Even within this lurid milieu, Jimmy Smack stood alone. Hating Life
(from Death Rocks) easily locates Jimmy within the negative-punk and
KBD lexicon. However his recordings, consisting of voice, rhythm box
and electrified bagpipe drones, otherwise veer closer to other-worldly
avant-garde rituals. Jimmy's background in theatre and performance art
helping inform not only his menacing stage presence, but also spawning
the singularity of his sound.
Death Is Certain comes housed in a printed inner sleeve featuring
rarely seen archival photos, liner notes by Cooper Bowman and excerpts
from an interview with Jimmy Smack conducted by Juan Mendez (Silent
Servant).

TERADA, SOICHI - ASAKUSA LIGHT
Back in 2015,
Japanese deep house pioneer Soichi Terada stepped back into the
limelight courtesy of Sounds From The Far East, a Rush Hour-released,
Hunee curated retrospective of material released on his Far East
Recording label in the 1990s and early 2000s. Buoyed by the positive
response and renewed interest in his work, Terada went back into studio
to record his first new album of house music for over 25 years, Asakusa
Light. Developed over 18 months, Terada tried to recreate the mental
and physical processes that led to the creation of his acclaimed
earlier work. Those familiar with Teradas celebrated,
dancefloor-focused sound of the 1990s - a vibrant, atmospheric, and
emotive take on deep house powered by the twin attractions of groove
and melody - will find much to enjoy on Asakusa Light.

Compiled by Hunee, 'Sounds from the Far East' features highly sought
after material by legendary Japanese house producer Soichi Terada and
fellow producers Shinichiro Yokota, Manabu Nagayama!
Soichi Terada is an adventurous multitalent and over all a good sport.
He was born in the sixties, and as a child he loved to play on his
fathers' electric organ. Terada majored in Computer Science and
Electric Organ and after he graduated, he founded his Far East
Recording in 1989, because he couldn't find a label for his
compositions at that time.
The sound of Far East Recording is very much inspired by early nineties
US deep house. Soichi Terada went out to parties in the late eighties,
were he was equally influenced by house and hip-hop. A few years later,
Terada took on producing music by using digital sampling. In the early
nineties he occasionally DJ-ed with a DAT player and some reel tapes,
instead of using records and turntables.
"Sounds From The Far East" shines new light on Soichi Terada's label
and consists of material that was originally released in the early
nineties. Next to Terada's music, Hunee also selected a few tracks by
fellow artist Shinichiro Yokota for this compilation, as well as 'Sun
Showered', a track based on the incredible Paradise Garage gem called
'Sunshower', by Terada and Nami Shimada.

Antipodean Anomalies
2 is Left Ear Records most ambitious project to date, a compilation
that took over 4 years to license and includes 17 artists across a
double LP. AA2 picks up where the first iteration left off, with
co-compilers Chris Bonato & Bridget Small continuing to dig through
the music of the geographically isolating and maverick landscapes of
Australia & New Zealand
As with the first iteration, Left Ear continues to excavate the music
from these vast micro-scenes that evolved out of a number of small
community-focused domains creating their own unique reinterpretation of
musical influences from near and far, spanning the years 1980 - 1992.
The compilation scopes an overlooked epoch from Adelaide, presenting
acts such as the DNA Lounge, TCH & Will Kuiper. A close-knit
community of like-minded mates that made distinctive electronic music
together throughout the 80's, all of which remained unreleased until
now. Buchanan Holbrook capture the ambiance of Perth's heat prodded
afternoon's perfectly with their track Hunger, a breezy 9-minute
minimal-jazz jam that includes kalimba, water samples & conga.
Furthermore, artists like David Watson & Colin Offord use samplers
and handmade instruments to offer a more abrasive and experimental
aesthetic.
To round out the compilation, artists such as Jane Stevenson,
discovered a 7" at an op-shop and found the needle stuck on the word,
loha'. Using tape loops, she chose to highlight imperfections rather
than hide them and in unison managed to cross boundaries of time; the
60s (album voice) and the 80s (my voice), of location; Hawaii and
Australia, and of language; "Aloha and Hi". This ethos echoes the
compilation's vision, to champion artists that implement impromptu
creativity, and who have a desire to create regardless of their
surroundings and resources. AA2 signs off with the Back to Back
Zithers, drawing inspiration from the haiku poems of Basho. To
illustrate this, Kari set a Kacapi improvisation to the backdrop of the
cicada chorus of summertime in outer Melbourne.

Birthed at the turn
of the '80s, synth and wave music has remained a constant force over
the last four decades, with a recent spike in interest in the sound
offering further proof of its' timeless, out-of-this-world quality.
It's against this backdrop that Dutch DJ Interstellar Funk presents his
celebration of the style, "Artificial Dancers - Waves of Synth".
A bumper compilation bristling with obscure and hard-to-find gems, the
set sees the Artificial Dance label founder joining the dots between
synthesizer and drum machine-driven tracks in a variety of subtly
different styles. It's the result of hundreds of hours spent digging
through dusty old records, tapes, and the Bandcamp accounts of DIY
musicians who have been active since the sound's first boom in the
early 1980s.
The 11-track set draws on tracks made and released at different times
over the last 40 years, with the earliest cut committed to tape in 1978
and the most recent in 2018. While the tracks date from the '80s, '90s,
noughties and 2010s, the showcased cuts are united by a primitive but
futuristic quality that makes dating them difficult. In many cases,
it's hard to tell which tracks were made in the early 1980s and which
were conjured up in 21st century studios.
As you'd expect, highlights are plentiful with a number of the most
unknown or sought-after cuts appearing on vinyl for the first time. In
this category you'll find the Human League's odd but inspired early
number "4JG", a near mythical 1982 live version of Liasons Dangereuses'
"Dias Cortas" (previously only available on a VHS video) and Chris and
Cosey's "Hybrid C", a brilliant mid-'90s cut plucked from their CD-only
album "Skimble Skamble". You'll also find a rare demo version of Clan
of Xymox's Dutch darkwave classic "Stranger", which became a club smash
across Europe in 1983.
Interstellar Funk has also chosen to showcase tracks by a range of DIY
producers and lesser-known artists. These include Californian band
Batang Frisco, who self-released a sole private press album in 1986
(their contribution, "Sewing Machine", is dedicated to founder member
Bill DiMichele, who passed away this year), Matthias Schuster's Im
Namen Des Volkes project - which contributes the previously unreleased
2014 track "Alles Ist Gewinn" - and Zahgurim, a short-lived early 0s
act who reunited in 2018 to record their first new material since 1983.
If that wasn't enough to set pulses racing, the compilation also
showcases a solo track by sadly departed Psyche member Stephen Huss.
Nobody is quite sure when Huss recorded "Infinity Sign", but we can
confirm this is the first time that one of his solo productions has
ever appeared on vinyl.

For their first multi-artist compilation, Music From Memory take us on
a trip to the heart of the Amazon rainforest. Outro Tempo: Electronic
and Contemporary Music From Brazil, 1978-1992 is a double LP that
explores the outer reaches of Brazilian music, where indigenous rhythms
mix with synthesizers and where MPB mingles with drum computers. As
Brazil faced the last years of its military dictatorship and transition
to democracy, a generation of forward-thinking musicians developed an
alternative vision of Brazilian music and culture. They embraced
traditionally shunned electronic production methods and infused their
music with elements of ambient, jazz-fusion, and minimalism. At the
same time they referenced the musical forms and spirituality of
indigenous tribes from the Amazon. The music they produced was a
complex and mesmerising tapestry that vividly evoked Brazilian
landscapes and simultaneously reached out to the world beyond its
borders.
The product of extensive research, this compilation is a unique
introduction to this visionary music and features many fresh
discoveries in a country well trodden by record diggers. It gathers
tracks from obscure albums that have for too long been neglected by
even the most avid collectors of Brazilian music. It includes now
highly sought after music by Andrea Daltro, Maria Rita, and Fernando
Falco, as well as unknown gems like those of Cinema, Carlinhos Santos,
and Anno Luz. This is an essential release that reveals a broader
spectrum of Brazilian music, striking a unique sonic signature that is

Marco mines deep into the 90s era (1989-93) Italian house underground

This spring, Safe Trip will release Welcome To Paradiso, an expansive
retrospective of the Italian dream house sound co-compiled by label
founder Young Marco.
At the tail end of the 1980s, a new take on deep house began to emerge
from Italian studios. 'Dream house' drew inspiration from key U.S deep
house records of the period ï the spacey melodiousness of Larry Heard's
productions, and the rich jazziness of tracks originating in New Jersey
in particular but sounded distinctly different. Its'
'head-in-the-clouds' feel all rich chords, tactile basslines, fluid
piano lines and starry electronics made 'dream house' a uniquely
Italian proposition.
First and foremost, the style echoed the wavy, glassy-eyed positivity
of the period more than any other. While music in the UK and the low
countries was getting faster and heavier, Italy's 'dream house'
producers continued to create music shot through with warmth and
colourful musicality until 1993. While few 'dream house' records were
made after then, its' sounds and loose aesthetic influenced subsequent
styles such as trance and progressive house.

Trip is taking one final deep dive into the warm waters of Italian
dream house with Welcome To Paradise Volume 3, the concluding chapter
in the labels journey through the previously overlooked world of one of
dance musics most vibrant and influential underground movements.
While the influence of dream house continues to echo through the ages,
the style was at its peak between 1989 and 94, when producers across
Italy delivered a high volume of loved-up, wavy and occasionally
blissful productions that fused contemporary deep house tropes - most
notably from Chicago, New York and New Jersey - with elements borrowed
from ambient, jazz and Balearica.
It's this six-year period that provides the focus for Welcome To
Paradise Volume 3, which draws together a spine-tingling mixture of
sought-after classics, unheralded gems and little-known delights from
the original Italian dream house movement.

VARIOUS/SASSY J - PATCHWORK
Rush Hour announces
their second artist compilation Patchwork, curated by one of the
label's most loved family members, Sassy J. The Swiss DJ is the very
embodiment of passion and long-standing dedication to the craft of the
DJing, but also to the community surrounding the music that she lives
and breathes. For the past fourteen years Sassy J has run the Patchwork
night in her native Bern and in London, with guests ranging from Theo
Parrish and Little Dragon to Floating Points and MF Doom invited to
share their respective musical visions. Her collaborative approach
stands out in a DJ world that is too often weighted in favour of
promoting the individual. This compilation grows out that unique
sensitivity, foregrounding a theory of curation that centres on
long-term bonds, articulated through Sassy J's personal relationships
with the contributing artists.
Patchwork speaks to the grass roots values that Sassy J espouses,
showcasing music by many of the artists that have joined her throughout
the years in clubs, on the radio, and at home. It is an expression of
Sassy J's individual musical path that casts its gaze firmly in the
future: Patchwork is made up almost entirely of new and unreleased
songs that are exclusive to this collection. Patchwork captures a sound
that has continued to evolve in its restless search for new musical
directions. Across thirteen tracks we find forward thinking electronic
music rubbing elbows with cosmic jazz and deep percussion workouts from
Brazil and beyond.
There are irresistible calls to the dancefloor: 2000 Black's UK boogie,
whilst the early rave of Nu Era and Aardvarck's sub-rattling techno
channel the grittier edges of the club experience. We find machine
music imbued with humanity in Larry Heard's deep house classic
"Survivor" and in Ron Trent's WARM project, whose gentle breeze points
to a different side of the legendary producer. Patchwork also opens a
more immersive listening space in which the radical indie soul of
Georgia Anne Muldrow. Patchwork also includes Sassy J's collaboration
with veteran producer Alex Attias, marking her own place in a universe
that is held together by her singular thread.
Patchwork is compiled by Sassy J and features ten exclusive tracks. It
will be released on 2xLP, CD and digital formats on december 9th, on
Rush Hour Records.

VIDEOSEX - VIDEOSEX
While little known
outside of the former Yugoslavia, Videosex's self-titled debut album
from 1984 sold in significant numbers, making superstars of the young
Slovenian musicians responsible for making it. The set not only helped
turn Yugoslavian teenagers on to the possibilities of Western-style
electronic pop, but also inspired them via satirical, often explicit
lyrics.
Their debut performance at the Novi Rock festival in Ljubljana lead to
an immediate contract offer from Slovenia's biggest record label. It
wasn't long before the band were holed up in studio TOP TEN in
Ljiublana recording what would become their debut album. They
effectively moved in to the studio for days and weeks on end, clocking
up well over 200 hours of recording time in which they mixed
experimentation with a desire to polish each song to perfection. The
result is their first album which includes nine songs touching a
variety of sexually charged subjects including erotica, lesbianism,
voyeurism and sadism.
Comes with additional printed inner sleeve containing exclusive
pictures and liner notes.

we fast forward to the 90s - 1991 to start with, when Metal, Hard Rock,
Punk and a love of Fugazi brought the Carroll brothers - Dave &
Anto - together with Graham Blackmore as Wormhole. 18 tracks spanning
their three LPs, with the full permission of the labels involved - the
revered Dead Elvis, the American based Chunkin' Bronchii' and Lo
Recordings - and remastered by one of their original collaborators and
producer of their debut Marc Carolan.
