Abest from Northern Germany are blurring the lines between atmospheric
Post-Metal and bleak Hardcore to create a dark and pounding emotional

September 2013. Their debut full length, "Asylum" was released in May

stirring cocktail of aggressive Sludge and Post Metal violent noises
and emotions that deals with the harsher side of life. Taking

BASK - AMERICAN HOLLOW
REPRESSED!
With roots in americana, stoner metal and post-rock, Bask is turning
out their own brand of doom. Psychedelic, heavy, and scenic songs weave
through sections of driving riffs, thundering percussion, loose grooves
and glimmering guitar. All topped with vocals that conjure spirits of
old country crooners. "Bask are a young band from North Carolina that
play a highly original blend of Americana, country, post-rock and
stoner/doom metal. American Hollow is the bands debut on The Path Less
Traveled Records and, without a doubt, I can say it is one of the most
unique records Ive come across in years. "High Mountain Pass" is an
energetic album opener, starting with a half-time shuffle that breaks
into a pretty straight-forward stoner rock groove, similar to some of
the less aggressive tunes by Red Fang. The vocals have a pretty
noticeable twang to them, giving the music a distinctly country vibe,
though with a bit more power and volume than anything youll hear on a
modern country record. The vocals are a strong point, to be sure, but
the music theyre soaring over is just as powerful; jangly guitars, low
rumbly bass, and big drums that are pretty reminiscent of the tone John
Bonham laid down in classic Led Zeppelin, though with a little more
dynamics. The first track might be a little misleading though, as the
rest of the album has an almost dreamlike feel to them, particularly on
the slower songs like "American Hollow" and "A Mans Worth," both of
which have a melancholy country-like feel to them. "American Hollow" in
particular has a post-rock, indie rock vibe mixed in, almost like Band
Of Horses, except Bask go into a bit heavier territory, whereas Band Of
Horses obviously have a more radio-friendly vibe." For fans of Led
Zeppelin, Red Fang, and Band of Horses.

years for these guys to finish this project - a very ambitious project,
because they wanted to do every song with a different singer that they
love. And as you can imagine, there were a lot of people keen to do it
and a few really did it. So, in the end you'll get the most promising
BLCKWVS record you ever listened to. They still have their trademark
monolithic super heavy doom sound, but have spiced it a bit here. The
folowing people did their part - and tell a spacey story from song to
song. Toni (Union Of Sleep), Ed Fraser (Heads), Marc Grewe (Insidious

CRYPTS from Germany deliver very true old school deathmetal, no
gimmicks, no intos, pure and simple stripped down end of the 80s style.
Without any exaggeration you can name Morgoth, early Entombed, Hail Of
Bullets or Autopsy as comparisons - techically fit, great songwriting,
a fantastic singer, who, if i can believe the band, growls even in
normal conversations. This record has the power to raise the dead and

DEMON HEAD - RIDE THE WILDERNESS
After this
Copenhagen 5 piece formed in 2012, released a demo EP and a two-track
EP, the first longplayer of top knotch doom will be released through
TCM. The previously released songs were recorded once again and put on
the new record. Rock is the backbone of the record, the ghosts of
classic rock bands haunts this records, but not taking over the sound
of the band. The vocals are reminiscent of Danzig and Year Of the Goat,
but less anthemic and more gritty. The guitar sound is not overly
distorted, which gives this record the taste of old spiderwebs from a
tomb, but played in the fashion of Thin Lizzy. The lyrical center
orbits around doom rock topics, like occults, fantasy, close to In
Solitude and Cirith Ungol. Obviously these dudes gave the universe,
demons and drugs a serious thought! As if the last 30 years of metal
evolution weren't there, the band strikes through distorted blues
riffs, spooky lyrics and mind crippling slow drum parts. This
proto-doom band swings like Bill Ward, battling through guitar parts
when Tommi Iommi and Victor Griffin meet in hell, topped with the
reminiscient sound of Bobby Liebling. Blues, swing and soul mixed in
satans kitchen, can't miss this!

FLESHWORLD - THE ESSENCE HAS CHANGED, BUT THE DETAILS REMA
A five-piece band
from Kraków, Poland, revolving around the concepts of uncertainty and
change, beauty found in decay, and the indescribable emotions.
Unpleasant, noisy, and melodic sludgy post-hardcore, evoking nostalgia,
regret, and uneasiness. 2019 will see the release of their new album,
"The Essence Has Changed, but the Details Remain" through This Charming
Man Records. It blends blackened hardcore with melancholic screamo, and
psychedelic improvisation. The album was recorded entirely live in
Monochrome Studio, a reclusive retreat in the Silesian wilderness,
engineered by Haldor Grunberg from Satanic Audio (Thaw, Behemoth) and
mixed/mastered by Sylvain Biguet, who also worked with artists like
Birds in Row, Death Engine, Valve, or As We Draw. Fleshworld was
initially founded in 2010 as an electronic/post rock duo, the band
gradually grew and developed. For a while they revolved around the
post-rock/post-metal genres. Since then, the band has been getting
heavier and more aggressive with each iteration, while still retaining
a certain introspective mood and melodic approach.

FRASER, ED - GHOST GUMS
Ed Fraser is the
singer and guitar player of Berlin's darknoise trio HEADS. Native
Melbournian singer, guitarist and songwriter Ed Fraser relocated to
Berlin from Australia in 2013, founding the Berlin-based post punk band
Heads with two native Germans in early 2014. Heads released two
critically acclaimed LPs - S/T (2015) and Collider (2018) - with label
releases in Europe, Australia and the USA, extensively touring Europe
and North America with bands the likes of Metz (Canada), Protomartyr
(USA), Nothing (USA) and many more. Ed has now expanded his musical
repertoire with his debut solo EP 'Ghost Gums', out via This Charming

A new breaker from
This Charming Man, a newer band that has stripped off their children's
clothes with the third disc and is now giving full throttle. On the one
hand the forward-lookingness of a Hamburg punk school, grandma Hans,
clearly Turbostaat (the older things), on the other hand a higher
aggressiveness and directness of 90s US Emo. This sounds so well and
properly produced that Tobi Neumann (nozzle hunter) wanted to share a
song. He got it and got it right: the guys know how they sound and how
they arrange songs. Especially the voice can so intensify, that the
whole shit, against which Freiburg sings even more avalanche-like.
Whether they know Freiburg is a total hippy town? Hopefully not,
otherwise they would make hippiescheisse. Or just because of the name:
Here is the appearance and the theme, the fault in the perfect, the
desire to scream, when everything is really quite good. Or so.

These fellas from Munich Germany are a typical power rock trio mayhem,
which took me instantly as I listened to their first recorded demos!
They pretty much sound like they look: bone-dry, dusty & oldschool

HOW I LEFT - BIRDS IN THE CITY
In the middle of the
southern German province, where small grapes become delicious wine, the
very own and soothing sound for lovers is created. How I Left creates
music that will make fans of the Weakerthans, Wilco or Ben Kweller feel
good in their stomachs, think slacker-folk meets catchy indie-pop! Cozy
drums and bass rumble, over it loose guitars, an old piano and the
Philicorda home organ from the bulky waste. As soon as the vocals
start, the trained ear wonders when the vocal fusion of Paul Simon,
Neil Young and Conor Oberst took place. The lyrics are reminiscent of
American Short Stories - everyday situations, curious headlines and
interpersonal encounters merge into literary miniatures. Stubborn with
a pinch of esprit!
One half of the duo, Julian Bätz (vocals, guitar, piano, organ), can be
found more often as Helmet Lampshade with the songwriting jewel Marcel
Gein in all kinds of concert and recording situations. He also tours
Europe with Rocky Votolato or works on his current solo album with Olaf
O.P.A.L. (The Notwist) or Sebastian L. Phillip (Die Wilde Jagd). The
How I Left Magic is created by jazz drummer Michy Muuf (the other duo
half). The casually pointed drumming swings straight into the heart -
memories of Levon Helm from "The Band" come to mind. Put into shape by
mixing and mastering mastermind Christian Bethge (Stella Sommer,
Messer, Gewalt), the two create music together that has never been
heard before in this country. It sounds at least as good as the vino
from this corner of the republic tastes. Word of honour!

Three years have
passed since the last Hysterese record, and these last years brought
change to the band. All grew older, some got babies and some went their
different paths. So 2021 is a bit of a new era for Hysterese,
personally and music-wise - with a new bass player, a new method of
songwriting and more diverse influences which are reflected in slightly
new song vibes. The last self-titled album already showed a glimpse of
what might possibly happen while composing new material. Moritz and
Helen split the composing and added a more morbid style - it got
darker, and shows a bit more of a mature or adult approach to write
intelligent, powerful songs.
Hysterese's trademark, the twin lead vocals of Helen and Moritz loses
its weight as Helen takes more and more the role of the lead singer.
They have less stakkato riffing and more open, atmospheric guitar work
filled with superb guitar-melodies. Kai's precise, machine-like
drumming, and Jana's flawless basswork do the final tricks - one can
explore more than a "one, two, three, four" - punk rock album.
Overall the seed they planted on their third record became a strong
unique plant with ripe fruits which taste like darkness, melancholy,
strength, anger, rage and fury. They created some sparkling
düster-müster-popunk-diamonds, which are not afraid to take some
detours through genres like alternative-rock or post punk.
If you dig the darkness of The Wipers, the explosiveness of old
Descendents records and the hits and melodies of your fav Blondie or
Billy Idol songs, I'm sure you will dig this piece of rock music.

reel tape found in the cellar of an abandoned house in the woods, circa

back with their second album, 'Burning Village'. In the interim between
albums Mountain Witch broke the bank on focusing and tightening their
songcraft, honing the edge of their established identity while mining
previously untapped potential: adding dimension, widening the scope and
prominence of the vocals and worshipping the riff with increasing
fervor. 'Burning Village' is horror literature in leather and
inked-stained denim, protometal from Innsmouth, the soundtrack of
choice for Dunwich by night. At this point the band is out of the

vintage tones and killer riffs reminiscent of early Sabbath, their new
direction also takes in the boogie of Blue Cheer, ballsy strut of Deep
Purple and the total ambition of Pink Floyd. A sound that doesn't shy
away from its hard rock roots and at the same time doesn't stop long
enough to rest on them. A more structured record than anything they've
ever laid down before, Cold River's newest and most noticeable
characteristic can be heard in the addition of Rene Sitte's vocals and
darkened lyrics. Lysergic tales spun out over haunting grooves that
never stray far from the arcane acid jams that inspired them originally

Witch record "Extinct Cults" will be the last before a longer break, so
both the main dudes Rene & Rene decided to do it properly - so why
not take the main Mountain Witch doom flavour and add some new
ingredients, like organs and some nice background vocals? Then record
it the old school way and guess what: you will get a magnificent
written, great sounding, genre bending 70s rock record. They jumped
from 1970 to let's say 1976, took the main Black Sabbath worship and
added a bit more melody here and there... Not only KADAVAR or HEAT fans
will be satisfied, even more progresive stuff like early SCORPIONS or

switch from the prog label Tonzonen to This Charming Man with their
fourth album "Getaway" - and nobody could be more pleased about it than
me! What a mad trip the three of them throw in here. The very first
song almost bursts the duration of a long-playing record. Meandering
nicely trippy through the musical swamp rock landscape of the 60s &
70s, Mouth scrape along all the genres you can roam with a classic rock
band - prog, rock, space, garage, jazz or krautrock - this is all
formed into a coherent, stomping mass on "Getaway". With "Once" they
have a real hit on board that can make the dance floor of any
indie/rock party shake - simply great.
Previous albums "Rhizome" (2009/2020) , "Vortex" (2017), "Floating"
(2018), "Live'71" (2018), "Past-Present-Future" (2019)) were all highly
acclaimed works and I'm sure MOUTH's well matured album "Getaway" will
also pick up the critical acclaim. And of course the 4th album is an
album whose songs are woven together by a narrative concept: A hopeless
escape without a happy ending. The album artwork comes from the artist

MOUTH - VORTEX (REDUX) (COLOR)
Welcome to the
definitive Vortex. The LP you're holding has been on a journey, and no,
not just shipping. Mouths second after 2009's Rhizome,
Vortex was mostly recorded in 2011 and 2012 over five sessions in a
small space where the band rehearsed. Material was pieced together
intermittently over a period of 11 months with Chris Koller handling
guitar, keys and bass and Nick Mavridis on drums. Thats where it
started. Two construction projects: the studio and a recording that
would help define the course of the band in classic and melodic
progressive rock, happening almost simultaneously in a creative
meta-narrative that could easily stand as analog for the depth of
pieces like "Into the Light" or the sprawling "Vortex" itself, which
opens the record (new and old editions) in an encompassing display of
impulse and fluidity
Through experiments in atmosphere like "March of the Cyclopes" and
toward the finish of "Epilogue," Mouth married sounds that in other
contexts would come up disparate, like finding a hidden magnetism
between two north poles.
Most of the Vortex songs were created on the spot in the studio. There
would be no way to know it at the time, but this process would result
in a collection of songs with a broad range, within as well as between
the component tracks. "Parade" taps Sly Stone on the shoulder and asks
if he wants to party (he does), while the penultimate "Soon After."
resonates with its smoky, mellow-jazz vibe. "Vortex" itself happens
over six movements and was put together across different sessions,
while "Epilogue" happened in a day.
Dissatisfaction with the original mix - and when an album has as much
put into its arrangements as Vortex, that balance matters - would lead
Mouth to offer Out of the Vortex in 2020 as a collection of alternate
versions of pieces like "Mountain" and "Parade," as well as the
unreleased "Ready" and "Homagotago's Paddle Boat Trip," the latter an
apparent successor to a cut from Floating. But sometimes a thing
nestles itself into the back of your head and just wont leave, and
Mouths pursuit of a finished Vortex would lead them into the studio
again.
Koller handled the remix himself in Oct. 2023, and in addition to
helming the new master, krautrock legend Eroc (who drummed in
Grobschnitt) brought a gong to mark the beginning of "March of the
Cyclopes." Like a lot of the finer touches on this Vortex, be it a
hashed-out stretch in the title-track built on a drum/bass jam or just
pulling the vocals and Hammond down a bit in "Epilogue," the result is
a stylistic flourishing that was there all along throughout the journey

What a demolition!
Sometimes less is more - as we learned from the example of Park+Riot
from Leipzig. Samuel and Micha play guitar and drums, and that's enough
to kick up a riot. Somehow they are reminiscent of mid-90s chaoscore,
with a crazy dash of post-rock and the necessary little melodies that
make the songs stick in your head. Despite all this, the songs are
extremely dense and coherent and don't seem pieced together or
heterogeneous. What unites the songs is definitely a sense of rhythm
and melody, which somehow brings even the most disjointed song back on
track and almost allows pop moments to be heard. In "The End", for
example, spoken word parts meet black metal bludgeoning attacks, in
"Clouds", driving Swedish core parts meet post-metallic atmospheric
strumming, only to pick up speed again with a great deal of lan and
finally end in a hefty neckbreaker mosh - great! Here, three bands are
united in one, and one of them has something to say on top of that.
When the whole place is roaring along to the chorus of "Long Run", the
last one knows that they are part of something really important.

PHANTOM WINTER - HER COLD MATERIALS
"Her Cold Materials"
(named after Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" novel cycle, in
which a teenager must find herself and save her world) is a
coming-of-age folk horror tale of a teenage woman. When instrumental
Doom act OMEGA MASSIF announced its break-up, members Andreas
Schmittfull and Christof Rath reformed under the name PHANTOM WINTER.
The aim was to create extreme music. They called the style
"Winterdoom". Melancholy meets cold and anger. The drumming is brutal
and staccato-like, reminding one of machines and monstrosities. Lots of
noise, lots of anger, lots of Doom, Post and even Black Metal elements,
apocalyptic scenarios set to music, dense atmosphere, subtle guitar
melodies, a bit of drone, sometimes compact and sometimes epic. PHANTOM
WINTER weave all these components lovingly and serve the whole outcome
at the top level, with ornaments next to loads of dirt. Their live
performances are always intense and angry, visitors like to compare
them to church services.

See Through Dresses
released their debut self-titled LP in November of 2013. Principal
songwriters Mathew Carroll and Sara Bertuldo (which was part of Tim
Kashers latest Album "Adult Film" and did the whole US-Tour), along
with drummer Nate Van Fleet, have crafted a catalogue of songs indebted
to classic post-punk and new wave artists of the 80's, but their sonic
footprint more closely resembles the textural treatments of 90's
dream-pop and shoegaze. The arrangements often build as though to
erupt, only to implode. There are moments when Bertuldo and Carroll
sound noxious and distant, their voices doused in reverb, their guitars
droning and pulsing. When the clouds look dark, See Through Dresses
offer flashes of pure pop sunshine to punctuate those moments of
isolation and distance. At their most hopeful, they remind us of the
simplicity of longing and the eagerness that accompanies an expectation
for love in a loveless culture. At their most honest, See Through
Dresses portray a dull terror born of idleness, sickness, and failure.
The result is a well-rounded catalogue that disillusions as it comforts
and soothes as it burns by injecting the familiarity of music-gone-by
with lyrics about regrettable psychologies - its a total bummer thats
still fun to listen to.

SEX BEAT - CRACK
"Crack" is radical
reduction - for their second album, the Berlin band stripped away all
differences and embellishments, recording a punk album in their
rehearsal space that needs no further genre labels. DIY isnt a gimmick
here but an unavoidable necessity - Crack was made without a studio,
without a producer, and without a clue.
SEXBEAT approaches punk with historical awareness, drawing from a wide
range of influences, from Oblivians and Suicide to Hot Snakes.
Sonically, they take cues from the '90s Dischord Records catalog: bass
and drums drive forward, while guitar and vocals spit and snarl in
between.
The songs shift between being heavily fragmented and mechanical to
intricately crafted, but they always remain raw and unfiltered.
Lyrically, its all about what grinds your gears: broken politics,
broken society, and all the little broken things within ourselves.
References range from Gordon Solie Motherfkers** ("Give them a dirty
floor for a stage. A five bucks show and I'm stoked for days") to
George Orwell ("Four legs good, two legs bad"). And in the end, even
Grammy winner Beck gets a nod, because overarching it all is: "You make
me wanna try crack."

Songs from the
Centrifuge is the debut LP from SHUN. The neo shoegaze group from
Münster have made a name with their previously released four-song tape
Nothing Quite As Heavy, playing shows across Europe with bands such as
Slow Crush, Odd Couple and 80s heroes The Psychedelic Furs. The debut
album now finally brings us new material from the band, showcasing
their evolution into higher spheres.
Featuring some heavy, distorted, yet swayingly dreamy shoegaze for fans
of Nothing or Slowdive, the lead single "Centrifuge" shows only one of
many dimensions that SHUN incorporate in their style. Other songs like
"Dreaming in Color" and "Heavy Reverie" see the band leveraging
irresistible dream pop and indie rock vibes, while everything is tied
together in a somber space-gloom that is probably felt at its harshest
in ,RPM". Shoegaze purists will find that Songs from the Centrifuge is
much more than just another shoegaze record, with influences from space
rock á la Spiritualized and more beat-driven arrangements from the
likes of DIIV or The Chameleons.
Production and engineering duties were fulfilled by Pogo McCartney of
Messer fame, while the stunning artwork was contributed by Benny
Druckwelle (The Tidal Sleep, Spirit Crusher), both of which managed to
capture the retrofuturistic essence of Songs from the Centrifuge
perfectly.

Holy moly - this is
a neckbreaker. Known from several quality releases the Belgium
powerhouse TOXIC SHOCK pushed their boundaries once again. No
compromises! They combine all good things of end of the '80s with good
old hardcore like SUICIDAL TENCENDIES did on their early releases. So

Glasses. Trainwreck play an intense style of metallic hardcore, punk,

compilation as it celebrates the 10th birthday of the TCM Label and
their long lasting friendship with Chris Bethge, one of the masterminds
behind the Rama Studios in Mannheim and a strong force of the infamous
Melting Butter Sessions, which hosted a lot of TCM Bands over the past
years. We took the best sessions (all onetakes without overdubs and
such) and curated this compilation. The art direction came from long

Four lads from
Leipzig, Germany (two of which also perform in the band Deathrite)
launch a new band called Wayward! They are out to play some nasty
rock'n'roll, like holy Motörhead in 1979 wielding the quintessential
theme of destruction at every gig, just for the hell of it! The band
attended the same school, teaching themselves how to play dirty,
streetrock like Fast Eddie Clarke. One can instantly recognize their
love for hard rock and early NWOBHM, listener's can hear traces of the
pre-Mercyful Fate gang, or perhaps The Brats teaming up with
Girlschool; sounds resonating with very early Judas Priest or Tank.
Back in the golden days where the borders between rock, punk or metal
weren't as clearly divided as today, Wayward would have easily fit in,
free from modern influence.

in - a 2 minute John Dwyer-like surf/garage-guitar inferno, a stomper
for every garage-jam. BÄNG! surprise my friend, don't feel too cosy in
you "mr. heard it all"-cave. there are a few more unexpected turns for
you. you'll find cheasy lofi- Weezer-esque jams, scetch-like short
songs, instrumentals... this sound like coming straight from
Williamsburg. Ralv Milberg (Die Nerven, Karies) recorded these 14
