Showcase Showdown
Of Boston's numerous 90s punk exports, perhaps none are as singularly idiosyncratic as the SHOWCASE SHOWDOWN. While their contemporaries were plying more standard fare, the SHOWCASE SHOWDOWN were throwing everything they had at the wall, and it all stuck. That kitchen sink approach is epitomized on their 1996 debut LP, Appetite of Kings, which TKO Records is chuffed to be reissuing on vinyl for the first time in 30 years. Appetite of Kings came three years into the band's existence on the heels of several beloved 7" EPs that quickly established them as a fixture of the emerging 90's pogo punk scene. Combining the quirky freneticism of The Toy Dolls, the pop culture hyper-fixation of The Rezillos and the gruff energy of Garage Punk and Oi!, Appetite of Kings catapulted the SHOWCASE SHOWDOWN into the hallowed halls of peerless weirdos reserved for true one-of-ones. You want semi-cryptic historical/cultural references? Bitingly sarcastic political commentary? A uniquely unhinged musical sensibility? No need to pick just one. Appetite of Kings has it all. Whether you think of the SHOWCASE SHOWDOWN as the nerdiest band for bootboys or the toughest band for geeks, you're right. Thirty years on, Appetite of Kings endures as both an absurdist critique and a postmodern screed that's surprisingly relevant to the unraveling reality of today. So COME ON DOWN...
